We hope that you never actually walk into a closed garage, start a car, and just let it run. Carbon monoxide (CO) is one of the most prevalent toxic gases in vehicle service shops. It is known as the “silent killer” because it is invisible, tasteless and odorless. Nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) are also very toxic and are emitted by diesel vehicles. Now, it is true that building code requirements stipulate that all vehicle service shops must have CO and NO2 detectors to control the ventilation system. However, many installed detectors barely meet, or fail to meet, the minimum building code standards. How could this be? When a service station is being built, it only needs to comply with the building codes – but once in operation, it must comply with provincial occupational health and safety regulations, which are more stringent, for good reason.
