With Canada’s “hell frozen over” winters, it’s no wonder that indoor parking is so popular, and that it costs a small fortune, especially in Calgary! However, storing hundreds of cars under office buildings and residences can lead to a dangerous and unhealthy environment.
How so? Toxic gases. Carbon monoxide (CO) is one of the most prevalent toxic gases that can be encountered in an indoor environment. It is known as the “silent killer” because it is invisible, tasteless and odorless. Nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) are also very toxic and are emitted by diesel vehicles. Now, it is true that building code requirements stipulate that all vehicle storage facilities must have CO and NO2 detectors to control the ventilation system. However, many installed detectors barely meet, or fail to meet, the minimum building code standards. How could this be? It turns out that regulations governing an occupied facility are much more stringent than those applied during construction, hence making many detectors installed during construction inadequate thereafter!
